Analyse a chosen product you've created against audience theories

1B)
For my AS production I created the first two minutes of a movie along with the title sequence in the genre of Thriller. The synopsis of this movie is about a police detective who has been called up about a murder. On his arrival he takes the papers from the officer ate the door and proceeds up to the scene of the crime. Once he realises that the scene which he has been called to is a murder he radios the information to his partner. This is when the anatagonist (his partner) comes and reveals to the detective that it was him who comitted the murder. The aim of this opening was to create mystery and questions within the audiences mind to make them want to watch on and answer these questions. The mise en scene of the production helps to reflect the genre of the movie. It is set on an urban estate which is a general location for thriller movies. The use of suspense and unanswered questions is a typical convention of thriller movies.

Tom Ryall's theory (1998) argues that genre is fairly simple as it is structured and it helps directors to meet audience expectations as they will have a structure to follow. In thriller movies the opening scene always creates suspense and questions for the audience. This is a key convention for the thriller genre which is why in my production the film began with an event which would attract the audiences attention without revealing to them certain aspects of the event such as who the killer is or the motive for the murder. This also means that I will be meeting the audiences expectations as they will be expecting to see the key conventions when they are watching a thriller movie. This theory also links in with Rick Alterman's theory (1999) which argues that genre is clear and easy to define. The audience will know what to expect and will be able to relate as well as react to the genre. When the audience sees the opening to my movie they will instantly know that it is a thriller as this is the type of opening which they will expect.

Steve Neale (1990) believes that genre is constantly changing although some aspects are repeated. People are trying to move outside of fixed boundaries. Without change, the audience may not be satisfied. As the audience will not be accustomed to this difference they will have to think more. The antagonist in my production did not have the demographics of a typical killer in a thriller movie. Killers are usually seen as large, burly characters who are strong and intimidating where as the killer in my production was small and not physically dominating. Also, the murderer in a thriller movie is not exposed until the end of the movie where as in my opening the killer is revealed within the first two minutes. These are changes which I made in order to challenge the audience and make them think more, creating a higher level of interest in the film itself.

In conclusion it is clear that the general codes and conventions of a genre must be present in a production in order to meet the audiences expectations and create a simple structure which they can follow, however there should be minor changes or differences in the plot of the film in order to make the audience think and also to make the production alot less predictable. People are beginning to move outside of the fixed boundaries and without change the audience may not be satisfied. It is clear that hybrid/bricolage genres have become more popular now and genres can include conventions of other genres. This makes it harder to define what genre a film is.

Due 28th April 2012

Explain how far your understanding of the conventions of existing media influenced the way you created your own media products. Refer to a range of examples in your answer to show how this understanding developed over time.

1A) For the production of my AS media production I created the opening first two minutes of a thriller movie. In order to create a thriller movie the first thing which I had to do was understand the key codes and conventions of the thriller genre, therefore the real media texts which I analysed were existing thriller movies. These movies include 'Seven', 'Are you scared?' and 'Saw'. From analysing these movies I found that all thriller movies begin with an event which will grab the audiences attention without giving away too much information. This creates questions in the audiences head making them want to watch further in order for their questions to be answered. This style of opening is typical of the majority of thriller movies I looked at. For example in 'Seven', the film begins with two detectives investigating a murder scene in a house. In 'Are you scared?' the movie begins with a girl who is trapped and scared, screaming for help and getting her face burned by acid in her attempts of gaining freedom. In 'Saw' the film begins with two men chained up in a bathroom with no idea of how they got there. This had an inluence on the plot of the film which I was creating as I then knew that I must include an event which would grab the audiences attention and create questions for them during the opening of my film. This is why I chose to include a murder scene in my production.

All of the thriller films which i researched also included a police officer or federal detective. This influenced me to make the main protagonist in my production a police officer as this is a character which the audience would expect to see in this genre of film. The audience is very important when creating a film as their gratification is the key to a good movie. Unlike in the horror genre, which thriller movies are commonly mistaken for, the killers are not generally muscular or have supernatural strength, but are instead very average in size and strength. Instead of killing their victims through brute strength, they kill their victims in methodical ways. This is clear in all three of the movies stated above as the killers in each are very strong but each have a reason behind their acts. As I wanted my production to conform to the thriller genre as best as possible, I made the killer not seem physically dominating, but instead fairly small and slim. This would conform to the stereotypical killer in a thriller film.

However, the killer in thriller movies are not usually identified to the audience until the end of the film as the events which are shown in the first few minutes of the film are carried throughout while the audience tries to work out who the killer is as I did not want my film to be too predictable.

For the production of my A2 media production I created a music video, website and digipak for the Rock song 'No Reason by the music group Sum41. Once again I used Youtube in order to find and view pre-existing products from the music group and find their trade mark. I also had to look at pre-existing music videos of the same genre in order to find the general codes and conventions of the rock music genre. This allowed me to differentiate my product from the typical Sum41 music videos and be different while still keeping the final product within the borders of the genre so that the audience knows what to expect when they watch the video. This is because I wanted to keep the same audience as the Sum41 music group while challenging their expectations of the Rock music genre.

However, for my A2 production, the research which I had to carry out differed from that of my AS production as I did not only have to research the video but I also had to research the digipak, which was a different for of media as this is made up of images. I also had to research different websites of  rock groups and what type of information are presented on them. The digipak showed me what types of images are presented on a rock song digipak.

I found the editing was fast and there were alot of cut aways. They also included a lot of  different shots and shot types in order to grab the audiences attention and keep them interested. The main focus of rock music videos are generally the aesthetics of it, grabbing the audiences attention from the events taking place in different shots whereas in other genres, for example the Pop genre, the main focus for the audience is the narrative of the video and the story behind it. In rock music videos, the audience are able to  relate to the video and find similarities between themselves and the band or the characters within the video which is why there is almost always a character within the video who fits the 'punk' subculture. This type of character in Rock videos is an archetype.

For the websites I found that the band always provides information of their background, they provide a way of fans or others who are visiting the site to contact them. Their sites usually have a shop where visitors can buy merchandise which is exclusive to the band.  Their background image is generally very negative and plain, no patterns being displayed but instead having a plain black or white background or even just having a stone wall. I found that the sum41 official website had a stone wall background with disturbing, cold images on them such as blood, a hand scratching the wall and graffiti.

For the digipak I found that the song listings are usually found on the back of the digipak. If they are not found on the back of the digipak then they are found on the inside of the cover, however the majority of rock song albums have their songs on the back.

In conclusion I found that my analysis of codes and conventions have improved between the time which I completed my AS Production and my A2 Production. This is because during the time of my AS Production I was only researching the video aspect of a product in order to complete my own. However in my A2 Production I was required to research the conventions of three different types of media, these being websites, video and image/digipak. I then had to interpret each of these different types of media in order to create my own. These three products also had to follow a generic theme as they each had to fit together.

Describe how your analysis of the conventions of real media texts informed your own creative practise. Refer to a range of examples in your answer to show how these skills have been developed over time.

Looking at two types of Media, describe the ways in which a particular group of people are collectively represented or provided for, using specific examples to support your response.

Looking at two types of Media, describe the ways in which a particular group of people are collectively represented or provided for, using specific examples to support your response.

Youths are the collective group which I studied throughout my A2 Media course.

In the media, youths are represented in a negative way. They do this by making the majority of teenage and young characters fit a typical stereotype based on the actions of a small minority of teens in society. This makes all teens and young people look bad. The typical stereotypes which are used to portray teenagers and young people to make these characters into criminals, ill mannered youths, trouble makers, vandals, promiscuous party animals and so on. An example of this is the London Riots. The media exaggerated the actions committed and created fear in society, blaming the entire event on youths. They do this through the use of pictures, video footage and biased words such as 'yobs', 'animals' and 'thugs' which categorises youths and controls the mind of the audience, telling people in society how to think instead of letting them decided for themselves. Camera shots of the riots shown on the news were close ups of youths and all interviews shown with the rioters were of youths, however when wideshots were shown of a larger crowd many adults could be seen amongst the rioters. This will affect the way in whch teenagers and young people will be seen in society. This is a form of post modernisation, where the media controls the mind of the audience and constructs a reality for them in their mind which they will base their life around. If the media merely reflected on collective identity, they would not use biased words or construct any type of view in the audiences head but would instead just describe or explain an incident and allow the audience to make their own judgement.

Not only are teenagers and young people portrayed negatively in the news and in reality but they are also portrayed negatively in fiction television programs. An example of a program in which there is a negative portrayal of young people and teens is Misfits. Each of the main characters are young people who are criminals doing community service. None of them have manners or respect for each other or anybody else other than themselves. Another television programme which portrays youths in a negative way is 'The Only Way Is Essex. This TV programme shows youths to be very permiscuous, ill behaved party animals who behave outrageously and do not have a high level of knowledge as the cast say many things which are not very intelligent.

Youths are also represented in a negative light by films. This has been the case over a long period of time. The film 'Rebel Without a Cause' was released in 1955, over 50 years ago, yet youths were still portrayed in a negative way. However over time the portrayal of youths have changed quite significantly and the change is very obvious to the audience when these films are compared. James Dean, in Rebel Without A Cause, is well spoken and shows respect to who he is talking to. He also dresses quite smart in and out of school. James Dean even hangs around with the character who is not seen to be 'cool' or in the in-group. Only later on in the film does he wear a red jacket with the collar up which was in those times seen as a rebels style of clothing. Females are seen as part of the group in Rebel Without A Cause but are not seen as rebels themselves. However if you compare this with a Y2K film such as Kidulthood the females have a group of their own, not hanging around with the male rebels but instead creating their own female rebel group. The clothing also differs in the Y2K film. The clothing which the 'rebels' wear are hoodies, jeans and trainers for the males and low cut tops, short skirts and other revealing styles of clothing. Even when in school uniform, instead of dressing smart, the rebels would wear hoodies or hats over their school uniform to show that they are a part of this culture. The dialogue also differs from that of Rebel Without A Cause. While James Dean and the other rebels spoke quite respectfully and formally, the youths in Kidulthood use alot of colloquialism in their speech when communicating as well as alot of swearing. The topics of which they speak are also quite adult and permiscuous usually including sex. If not sex then violence. This shows their rebellious culture through their speech as well as their actions where as in Rebel Without A Cause all of the trouble which they got up to was a lot more playful and troublesome. There is a clear difference but the collective group is still represented in a negative way.

In conclusion, youths as a collective identity are portrayed in a negative way by both the media and films. Not only have they been portrayed negatively recently but this representation has been the same for many years.

Describe how you developed your skills in the use of digital technology for media production and evaluate how these skills contributed to your creative decision making

In year 12, for my AS Media production, I was given the task of complete pre-production work and create a two minute opening to a film. The genre of film which my group chose to produce was a Thriller film. In year 13, for my A2 Media production, the task was to create a music video, website and digipak. The genre of the song which we chose to create a video for was a Rock Song. Before beginning work on these productions it was vital that I researched similar pre-existing products of the same genre so that I could identify all of the typical codes and conventions, making it easy for the audience to identify that genre and allow them to know what to expect when before they view it. However it also allowed my group to be able to differentiate our products from other products in some ways making it unique while still fit the genre which is meant to fit.

For the research of my AS Film Opening, I used websites such as www.IMDB.com in order to identify movie titles within the same genre as the film which i was creating as well as identify the synopsis of these movies so that I could tell how these movie openings lead to the rest of the film. I then used Youtube to view the openings of many of these thriller movies taking the positive aspects which I liked from each one and interpreting them in my own way to fit my film, for example the opening sequence to the film 'SEVEN'. This also enabled me to see what these films all had in common and be able to identify the key codes and conventions of this genre. From this research I found that Thriller movies never reveal much at the beginning creating a sense of mystery and creating alot of questions for the audience which will then be answered later, often involving a twist which was set up right from the beginning to fool the audience. Thriller generally also include a murder. This is the same for the film SEVEN and The Di Vinci Code, which is another film which had a synopsis similar to that of the film we were going to create.

For my A2 Media production of the music video, digipak and website I again used Youtube to research existing products. However this time I did not only look at videos from the Rock genre as a whole but it was also important to look at existing music videos from the band who's song we were going to use. When researching the Rock genre I found that the editing was fast and there were alot of cut aways. They also included a lot of  different shots and shot types in order to grab the audiences attention and keep them interested.. I also used the Google search engine to find other rock bands official websites and see what they generally include on their websites so that when it came to producing my own I would know what to include to make it seem professional. I also used Google Images to search digipaks and find out what type of information is included on them and where that information is placed. I feel that I have developed my skills further since my AS Production as the codes and conventions as well as the research required for a Rock music video is different to those of a Thriller movie. They both also use very different shot types and angles. The editing between them were very different and, many more effects were used in the music video than in the thriller movie opening. With the music video I was able to experiment a lot more and produce shots with colour tints, three shots in one frame with sliding transitions as well as slow motion to slow down shots. This was all done on Sony Vegas Pro. For the website i also edited many photos of the band which I took using a professional camera. In order to edit these pictures I used Adobe Photoshop, a programme which was not used too widely across the production of the Thriller film opening.

Throughout both productions I also became aware and learned how to use many different online software's for different parts of the production such as Pixton, Bubbl.us, Prezi, Xtranormal and many, many more.

In progression from my AS Production to my A2 Production, I feel that my editing skills as well as my ability to utilise digital technologies such as Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Illustrator and Sony Vegas Pro to get the effects and finish which I want. The efficiency of the AS Production was not of a high level, however this year everything was better planned and things were done efficiently. The use of the internet and the various websites was very important as it gave me a a basic structure to work from and also influenced my ideas, adding to the creativity of both finished products.
